What is Earned Value Management?
- Earned Value Management(EVM) is a systematic approach to integrating and measuring progress on a project. EVM integrates technical performance, schedule and cost. Performance is objectively measured and quantified based on the physical work accomplished.
- EVM Provides management (internal and external) with objective answers to the following:
- Where have we been?
- Where are we now?
- Where are we going and how much is it going to cost at completion?
- EVM has been used for many years on contracts for the Department of Defense (DoD) and can be mandatory on certain DoD Cost and Incentive Contracts. Now the Federal/Civilian sector is starting to adopt EVMS standards and the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) has mandated that agencies must comply with the EVMS standard in order to receive funding for the Development, modernization, or enhancement (DME) of major information technology investments.
- EVMS education and training can be a costly endeavor for companies, when one considers off site or in-house training, GAP analysis, policy and procedure writing, new project alignment with EVMS analysis and reporting, and potentially new software. The minimum level of EVMS training recommended at an organization can be broken into 3 types, EVMS basics, EVMS for Management and Cost Account Manager (CAM) training.
